The Artist

Pen Volkmann has his studio on the grounds of his home in north Boulder, Colorado. Sculpture is currently his focus with an emphasis on bas-reliefs in bronze and ceramic but painting and digital art also intrigue him. 

To better impart the emotion of his art, all of the subjects were viewed first hand by Pen, who created the plein air or photographic references that are the basis of his work. Then later in his studio, details were lovingly added to bring the pieces to life. The buffalo herd was sited on a road trip. The hawk soared overhead on several dog walks. And the columbine was in the garden and now its fleeting beauty can be shared with you forever in bronze.
